Community of Practice

We Are A Community-Based Organisation

Collab-pana

We want to form a powerful group of problem solvers who can take on academic challenges. We value Teamwork, Integrity, Delivery, Consistency, and Enthusiasm, and our mission is to share our insights with younger engineering students who are in the same position we once were.

Our Practise

  • To create a hub, both physical and online.

  • To attract like-minded individuals who loves teaching, and learning by teaching.

  • To build and to sustain a community that stands out within Australia, empowering the next generation of successful maths, science, commerce, technology and engineering graduates.

In order for us to sustain this community
We have set up rules as below

  • Tutors must not accept payment in cash.

  • Tutors must not attend any private lessons unless calendar invitation/s have been sent out and accepted by all parties.

  • Tutors will only attend sessions organised and agreed upon. In the case where (ad hoc) an additional hour is requested by the Student on the day, it has to be communicated back to the team either via text messaging or email. Tutors who fail to follow this guideline may not get paid for the additional hours.

  • Tutors will manage lesson date/time/location directly with students and communicate any changes back to the management team via text messaging or email.

  • Tutors will ensure all lessons are conducted with a minimum of one tutoring hour.

  • Recommended students stay within the Tutor Lim community.

  • Tutor's Teachworks account is the source of truth for all hours conducted whilst working with Tutor Lim. The tutor’s billing hours will be based on all the lessons scheduled on Teachworks. Read more Tutors FAQ here.

  • When arranging classes with students, please make sure lessons are scheduled in advance. There are restrictions set on the platform to minimise conflict between tutors and students. **

  • Tutors are expected to manage their own students. Tutors are expected to come prepared prior to any lessons. As a rule of thumb, Tutors are expected to spend at least 5-10 minutes, reading over the materials provided before attending any lessons.

** For example:

  1. Tutors are to manage and plan the next lesson/s with their students.

  2. Scheduling can be made by either students or tutors, using Teachworks (under the Calendar tab).

  3. Cancellation is NOT allowed within less than 24 hours' notice, otherwise, the cancellation will be charged. (Yes, our tutors will get charged cancellation too).

  4. Upon completion of each lesson, tutors are required to mark the completion of the lesson. Failing to do so will cause confusion in the system and essentially we are unable to process your billable hours accordingly.

Violating these rules will result in a ban from our community.

Together, let’s be teachers. Rejoice in what you learn, and spread it.

Below are Commonly Asked Questions

How does payroll work?

All tutoring events and duration are recorded via Teachworks. Total hours and wages will be automatically calculated.

How do I get paid? and how frequently do I get paid?

Every tutoring hour you conduct will be recorded in our system. At Tutor Lim, payroll is released every fortnight. At the start of the week, after the closure of the previous fortnight. Timesheet closure usually happens on Wednesday/ Thursday. Tutors will get paid on the following Monday/ Tuesday.

What type of employment am I under?

It varies for all tutors. By default, you will be engaged under casual employment. Under casual employment, all tutors are classified as 'independent contractors' rather than 'employees'. For part-time or full-time employment, information will be shared during onboarding and tutors will be advised accordingly by our staff members. Employment type depends on how active you are within the organisation.

If I am put on trial, do I still get paid for my first lesson?

Yes! As long as you passed your trial session, the hours conducted will be included in the first time payroll.

How do I qualify as a tutor?

To qualify as a tutor, you will have to go through all onboarding steps.

What if I fail my first trial lesson?

If you fail your first trial lesson with your appointed student, you will not be accepted into the community. Depending on the scenario, you may be given a second opportunity (To evaluate case-to-case). The candidate who is unsuccessful in his/ her first trial usually fails to complete one (or more) of the following items:

1. Fail to create rapport with the student.
2. Fail to come prepared for the lesson.
3. Fail to deliver the lesson or unable to answer any questions being asked by the student during the lesson.
